Mount Eerie, the project of Phil Elverum (who used to record as The Microphones), is releasing a new album, A Crow Looked At Me, on March 24 via Elverum’s own label, P.W. Elverum & Sun. The album was written after his wife, Geneviève Elverum (née Gosselin and also known as Geneviève Castrée), passed away in July 2016 after losing her fight with pancreatic cancer. Previously he shared the album’s first single, “Real Death.” Now he has a video for another song from the album, the devastating “Ravens.” The song is an honest account of grief and the video includes some home movie footage of Geneviève. Geneviève was a musician and comic book artist who had recorded as both Woelv and Ô Paon. Geneviève was diagnosed with inoperable, stage four pancreatic cancer just four months after giving birth to their daughter and died a year later, leaving Elverum to raise their infant daughter on his own. A previous press release said Elverum recorded the album in the same room where Geneviève died, using mostly her instruments and writing the lyrics on her paper. The press release went on to say: “The songs are about the brutal details of that experience, from the hospitalizations to the grieving, the specific domestic banalities that become existential in the context of such huge and abrupt loss. These songs are not fun. They are pretty and they are deep, and they find a love that prevails beneath the overwhelming and real sorrow. It is unlike anything else in the Mount Eerie catalog in its unvarnished expressions of personal grief, metaphor-free.”

The album’s closing track, “Crow,” was featured on the recent charity compilation for the ACLU, Is There Another Language?
