NBC Cancels Southland
Well-Reviewed Cop Show Gets the Axe
The Hollywood Reporter reports that NBC has cancelled its well-reviewed cop show, Southland, before even giving it a shot at a second season, despite the fact that six episodes have already been shot for season two. It’s unknown if and when NBC will show those episodes.
Southland was produced by John Wells, the man behind such NBC hits as ER and The West Wing. The gritty police show was perhaps a victim of The Jay Leno Show, which now occupies the 10 p.m. slot each weeknight, leaving less room for scripted dramas, especially those that of the more adult and realistic variety that used to air at 10 p.m. Southland is also more expensive to produce than The Jay Leno Show or news programs such as Dateline NBC, which will occupy the Friday 9 p.m. slot that was reserved for Southland.
“I’m disappointed that NBC no longer has the time periods available to support the kind of critically-acclaimed series that was for so many years, a hallmark of their success,” Wells told The Hollywood Reporter. “We remain extremely proud of ‘Southland’ and are actively looking for another home for the series.”
