Tenacious D will replace The Beastie Boys as a co-headliner of the second-annual Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival. The news was given to journalists across the globe via a phone conference. “We’re literally phoning it in, this is awesome!” quipped Jack Black. As previously reported, The Beasties recently canceled a batch of shows after Adam “MCA” Yauch was diagnosed with throat cancer. Outside Lands will return to San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park from August 28th-30th, featuring performances by The Dave Matthews Band, Pearl Jam, Incubus, Ween, The National, The Dead Weather, Black Eyed Peas, Tom Jones, M.I.A. and a number of other musicians. Tenacious D will close the festival. The comedic rock slingers aren’t the most conventional choice so belly-aching will most likely commence soon. There was already some of that when news of the ‘90s-centric fest started popping up on blogs. The earth-shattering twosome had this to say about the upcoming festival slot:

“There is so much build up that when we let loose, California may be shaking loose from the rest of the country,” Jack Black said. The actor/musician riffed on the fact that he was born and raised on “California Island,” which he said would be created once the rock gets thrown down.

“Thank you all for this momentous occasion. It’s a thrill-honor,” gushed Kyle Gass (a Walnut Creek, Calif. native). “What was that Kyle?” asked Black. “I just made up a new word.”

Also, keep your eyes glued to the Mission District, turns out Jack Black is a big fan. “I’m a burrito guy. I go straight down to the Mission District. To [Taqueria]La Cumbre. Good ingredients,” he said, during the live conference call today. “We’re expecting 100,000 people to squeeze into there [Golden Gate Park] like a sausage,” said Black. Black also hinted that The Pick of Destiny pair might also debut a new song called “Deth Starr,” spelled specifically to avoid a Star Wars lawsuit.

How appropriate. Tenacious D opened a few Barack Obama benefit concerts for The Beastie Boys last year.

Meanwhile, MCA is said to be recovering. “So I’m about a week and a half out of surgery now and rapidly recovering from it,” he posted on his website. “I haven’t taken any of the pain meds, which supposedly speeds along the healing process, or should I say, taking them slows it down. Anyway, I spent 1 night at the hospital after the surgery. The hospital was too crazy to get any rest so I headed home to relax, have home cooked food and hang out with the family.”
