Phil Elverum (aka Mount Eerie) and Actress Michelle Williams Have Secretly Gotten Married
Williams Revealed the News in a Vanity Fair Cover Story
In a new cover story with Vanity Fair, actress Michelle Williams has revealed that she has secretly married musician Phil Elverum, who we've written about many times and records under the name Mount Eerie (and who used to record as The Microphones). As the article states, they were married "in a secret ceremony in the Adirondacks, witnessed by only a handful of friends and their two daughters" and Elverum and his daughter have moved to Brooklyn to live with Williams and her daughter. We offer our congratulations to the happy couple!
In 2017 Elverum released an acclaimed album, A Crow Looked At Me, which was followed this March by another equally acclaimed album, Now Only (which was our Album of the Week). Both were written after his first wife, Geneviève Elverum (née Gosselin and also known as Geneviève Castrée), passed away in July 2016 after losing her fight with pancreatic cancer. Geneviève was a musician and comic book artist who had recorded as both Woelv and Ô Paon. Geneviève was diagnosed with inoperable, stage four pancreatic cancer just four months after giving birth to their daughter and died a year later, leaving Elverum to raise their infant daughter on his own.
Actor Heath Ledger, Williams' former husband and the father of her daughter Matilda, tragically died in 2008 after they had separated, when Matilda was only two-years-old.
Williams has been especially private about her personal life, but felt the need to go public with her marriage. "Obviously I've never once in my life talked about a relationship," she tells Vanity Fair, "but Phil isn't anyone else. And that's worth something. Ultimately the way he loves me is the way I want to live my life on the whole. I work to be free inside of the moment. I parent to let Matilda feel free to be herself, and I am finally loved by someone who makes me feel free."
