​Lake Dorn is a New Orleans-born and Los Angeles-based dancer and vocalist. After getting her start in the world of modern dance, Dorn released her debut album, Prepare The Body, in 2020. In the years following the album’s release, Dorn’s musical output remained mostly quiet as she transitioned. In turn, her upcoming sophomore album, Black American Princess, acts as a full reintroduction to her art and her authentic self, blending shades of R&B, pop, soul, and dance music into a rich, dense, and expressive mix.

Last month, Dorn shared her latest single, “Pasadena,” and the full record is out later this week. Ahead of the album’s final release, Dorn is sharing another new track, “He Texted,” premiering with Under the Radar.

“He Texted” takes the shape of a slinking R&B cut, but Dorn colors the track with a moodier sense of drama. Her vocals are cooing and crystalline, but the underlying instrumental writhes with murky sub-bass, skeletal percussion, and droning discordant tones, eventually filling out with swelling synths worthy of a horror movie score. Although Dorn’s lyrics only trace the outline of her titular ex, leaving much of the finer details hazy, the instrumental communicates all that is needed一“he” is both bad for her and irresistible.

Dorn confesses, “There’s no way to stop from needing you / Say the prayer, but still can’t forget / And now we’re wrecking in this living room / Doin’ what this always leads to / Even though I’m better / I still feel something when I hear your name / Even though I’m better / No other person makes me feel the same.” The resulting track strikes a careful balance between sinister and seductive, all guided by Dorn’s virtuosic vocal presence.

The accompanying video, directed by Benjamin Wachtel, is similarly striking. It follows as Dorn preps for a hook-up and cycles through a series of different fits, making full use of Dorn’s dance background and elegant movement while painting her in cool, muted colors. At the end, “he” sends another text and bails on her, disappointing her once again.

Dorn says of the track, “‘He Texted’ is really about that person you know you’re done with — you’ve genuinely done the work, you’re good, and then they just… text. And suddenly, none of that matters anymore. Time had passed, I knew better, but at the end of the day, he was still the only one I wanted.”
