Premiere: Red Sleeping Beauty – “Merry Christmas, Marie”
God Jul Stockholm!
Dec 11, 2014 Red Sleeping Beauty
Early this year Swedish indie pop fans everywhere rejoiced when we premiered Red Sleeping Beauty’s cover of Alpaca Sports’ track, “Just For Fun.” If you count yourself in that camp, hold on to your woollies, today we’ve got a real treat—the Stockholm quartet’s first original song in seventeen years. (“Has it really been 17 years?” asked frontman Niklas Angergård upon hearing how long it’s been. “I think we sound like we are 17-years-old.”)
Conveniently enough, it’s a Christmas pop song called “Merry Christmas, Marie.”
According to the band, the holly jolly slant of the tune came as a bit of a surprise. “We were actually hard at work on our upcoming single, when we realized it was soon Christmas. Then we decided to record this smash instead,” explains vocalist Kristina Borg, eyes twinkling.
Comprised of acoustic guitars and analogue synthesizers, it’s a breezy tribute to the season.
“We are intentionally limiting ourselves to only analogue synthesizers and an acoustic guitar,” notes keyboardist Mikael Matsson. “It’s fascinating how strict limits can free your creativity.”
Take a listen to the fruits of their labor below. God Jul!
