As a lead up to by:Larm festival, we’ve been doing our homework, listening to the bands playing the event, and getting ready to experience aspects of Norwegian, Swedish, Finnish, Danish, and Icelandic pop culture that has yet to be exported to our shores. Icelandic trio Vök is doing their part by teaching us about another important aspect of Nordic life—getting through winter. Their contribution to our mixtape series is called Surviving Iceland. The very description has us reaching for our overcoats.
“Living in Iceland can sometimes be really bad for your soul and for your overall mojo,” says the band. “When things are at its worst we only get five hours of daylight a day which can get really depressing. During that time we’re usually drowning in snow or rain and heavy winds. To make things even worse, that is what’s happening now…BUT to fill our lives with hope during these horrid times we have made this amazing playlist! It is full of love, power, happiness, joy and DISCO! Its sole purpose is making our darkest days brighter and warmer. Not all of it is our everyday cup of tea, but these songs make us happy when we need to be and hopefully they’ll make you happy!”
Listen to the mix below. For more in our by:Larm mixtape series, check out contributions from Broen, The Amazing, Long-Sam, and LUGN. For those joining us on our Nordic music adventure, you can check out the by:Larm lineup and ticket details here.
