Primal Scream have announced Give Out But Don’t Give Up: The Original Memphis Sessions, a previously unreleased version of their 1994 album Give Out But Don’t Give Up from sessions originally abandoned. It’s due out October 12 via Sony Music.
As the follow-up to 1991’s dance masterpiece Screamadelica, the more classic rock/blues rock sounding Give Out But Don’t Give Up probably left some fans of the acid house influenced Screamadelica scratching their heads when it was released in 1994. But then again, Primal Scream have rarely been a band to make the same album twice and Give Out single “Rocks” remains a classic. Now the band have revealed that they are releasing an earlier version of the album. In 1993 the band originally recorded Give Out But Don’t Give Up at Memphis’ Ardent Studios with producer Tom Dowd and the Muscle Shoals rhythm section. Primal Scream later redid the album with producer George Drakoulias and that’s the version that was released in 1994. Primal Scream’s longtime guitarist Andrew Innes recently discovered the Memphis session tapes in his basement and they are now being released as Give Out But Don’t Give Up: The Original Memphis Sessions. You can preorder it here.
Primal Scream’s most recent album, Chaosmosis, was released back in 2016 via the band’s own label, First International.
