Sub Pop announced today that former Okkervil River frontman Jonathan Meiburg and his band, Shearwater, have joined the celebrated indie label’s family. Although details about the band’s next album are still tightly under wraps, the label claimed the album is expected to drop in early 2012. Meiburg also divulged that this new record presents a clear change—for the better—in the band’s discography. “We’re having trouble taming this one,” Meiburg said in the Sub Pop press release. “Luckily, we don’t really want to.”
Recently, Shearwater put on a grand three-hour performance that showcased their last three albums, collectively called The Island Arc, in their hometown of Austin, Texas. The live recordings from the concert are now available at the band’s bandcamp site.
