Iceland’s Sigur Rós have announced a deluxe 20th anniversary reissue of Ágætis byrjun, which was released in 1999 and was their second album (and remains their most beloved). The reissue is due out June 21 via Krunk and comes via a 7-LP box set featuring demos, rarities, and Live at Íslenska Óperan 1999, a concert recorded at Íslenska Óperan (aka Icelandic Opera House) on June 12, 1999 that hasn’t been heard since it was first broadcast on RAS 2 radio at the time. They have shared one of those live tracks, “Flugufrelsarinn (Live at Íslenska Óperan).” Listen to it below. Also below are the tracklist and cover art for the reissue, as well as a teaser trailer.
A press release further describes the box set: “The deluxe vinyl box set also comes with an 84-page cloth-bound book, featuring a plethora of visual content drawn from the Sigur Rós archive (aka an overstuffed case in Kjartan’s studio). Handwritten string arrangements, lost artwork ideas and early ‘business cards,’ are seen alongside candid images of the band at the moment just before their lives changed. The whole is housed in an elegant linen-bound box, available exclusively thru the band’s website www.sigurros.com. The first 1999 copies will be numbered. All the musical content available in the deluxe vinyl edition is mirrored in the expanded 4 x CD edition, and is included in the double vinyl version as a download code. The 4xCD and 2xLP will be available in all good record stores from June 21, 2019.”
Alas, the last time we reported on Sigur Rós, last October, it was because drummer Orri Páll Dýrason had left the band after being accused of sexually assaulting Los Angeles-based artist Meagan Boyd in 2013, leaving Jónsi and Georg Hólm as the members of the band. Dýrason was not involved with Ágætis byrjun, he joined the band after it was released.
