After a blistering first day in Austin’s Zilker Park that included performances by David Byrne, The National and Paul McCartney, Texas’ own Annie Clark, aka St. Vincent, slinked to the Stubb’s Waller Creek Amphitheate stage for an Official ACL festival late show.

Consisting mainly of tracks from her most recent releases, 2014’s self-titled St. Vincent and last year’s MASSEDUCTION, Clark played using only her line of customized Ernie Ball guitars, most notably an orange design with cheetah print pick guard. The sweaty, sexy set pulled in other festival performers including Janelle Monae, who watched from the balcony. With Prince’s prodigy looking on, St. Vincent often times channeled her own often noted proxy, David Bowie, playing with a slickly focused ferocity while striking poses, even with hands behind her back, between notes.

While Clark herself wore a flesh colored cat suit, with orange accents, keyboardist Daniel Mintseries and drummer Matt Johnson were made to dress like cartoonish gimps, while bassist Toko Yasuda was spared the fate. The production represents the evolution of the tour, which began with Clark headlining shows solo, eventually incorporating the rest of her trusted band as it progressed into the beaming behemoth with gigantic lighting and at times bizarre choreography it’s grown to.

Mixed within this tour as well recently have been special piano-only performances featuring collaborator Thomas Bartlett, a.k.a. Doveman, which birthed MassEducation, an intimate reimagining of last year’s MASSEDUCTION, which will be released October 12, just a day shy of the anniversary of the original’s October 13 release in 2017.
