The Besnard Lakes have announced some fall tour dates that include shows with Band of Horses, Jenny and Johnny, and others.

The last time The Besnard Lakes rolled through NYC, I saw them at the Bowery Ballroom with my girlfriendwho’d never heard of the band. We walked right up to the door just as the show was starting and bought our tickets. “How good can a band be if they’re playing the Bowery Ballroom and they’re not even sold out on the day of the show?” she asked.

Why The Besnard Lakes aren’t selling out a 550-person venue in New York City after seven years of touring on the strength of one amazing album (The Besnard Lakes Are the Dark Horse) and one also amazing recent release (The Besnard Lakes Are the Roaring Night, shortlisted for the Polaris Prize) is beyond me. It means that most of the people reading this haven’t seen them live, which is a shame, because this is a group with a huge live sound that’s still playing smaller venues.

Lucky for you, The Besnard Lakes are touring North America this fall along with Land of Talk, Suuns, and Wintersleep and open for Band of Horses, Jenny and Johnny, and Brad on select dates.

Check out the MP3 for “Albatross” from The Besnard Lakes Are the Roaring Night, then go and buy tickets to one of their shows. They sound even better in person.

Some sand is better than others for moulding - do you know how well your beach’s sand will hold up? If it does well, I definitely suggest buying some of the moulds for turrets, although August may be a bit late to find them in the stores. You will use them over the years. You can also bring kids horse jumps to the beach. One day the group of pre-teens we went with did nothing more than try to dig a hole to China (filling it in, of course, before we left).
