The Shins released a new album, Heartworms, in March via Aural Apothecary/Columbia. Also in March they announced a competition where you could win the band’s very first touring van, a 1990 Ford 350 Clubwagon. To win it a musician or band had to cover a song from Heartworms. The Shins have finally picked a winner, Michigan trio Mertle. Mercer drove to their home in Eaton Rapids, Michigan to surprise them and deliver the van in person (watch video of the surprise below). Also below is the charming video Mertle submitted of them covering Heartworms track “Painting a Hole,” in which they also explained that their current mode of band transport is falling apart. The Shins have invited Mertle to open for them at their July 27 concert at Grand Rapid’s Meijer Gardens Amphitheater. All The Shins’ upcoming tour dates are below too.
