The ever-prolific Ty Segall is releasing a new album, First Taste, on August 2 via Drag City. Now he has shared another song from it, “Ice Plant,” the third and final pre-release single from First Taste. The song is a bit of a change of pace for the garage rocker, featuring mainly Segall’s vocals backed by beautiful harmonies from Shannon Lay, before ending with a solo piano part played by Segall. There’s not a guitar in earshot. Listen below, followed by Segall’s upcoming tour dates.

Segall had this to say about the song in a press release: “‘Ice Plant’ is a fever dream reflection of my childhood. . . A past no more. Was very fun to sing with the amazing Shannon Lay. My neighborhood in Laguna Beach was and still is covered in Ice Plants and Eucalyptus trees that would fall on our family’s car and stain the paint job. One winter we tried to surf down the Ice Plant hills.”

Previously Segall shared a video for First Taste‘s first single, “Taste.” It was one of our Songs of the Week. Then he shared the album’s second single, “Radio.”

A press release says First Taste features instrumentation previously unexplored by Segall, including “koto, recorder, bouzouki, harmonizer, mandolin, saxophones and brass, voices, and a sprinkling of keys.” Also, when the drums are heard on the left speaker it’s Segall playing, but when they are heard on the right speaker it’s Charles Moothart playing the kit.

Segall’s most recent albums before this one were the covers album, Fudge Sandwich, and the live album, Deforming Lobes.
