Goldfrapp, the British duo of Alison Goldfrapp and Will Gregory, released a new album, Silver Eye, last month (March 31) via Mute. Now Goldfrapp have shared a video for “Systemagic.” Alison Goldfrapp directed the video herself, in her directorial debut. The dance-heavy clip was choreographed by illyr and a press release says it “features a coven of moon-worshippers dancing under the watchful Silver Eye.” It’s ever so slightly NSFW, with a tiny bit of male and female nudity. Watch it below, followed by the band’s upcoming tour dates (including some shows they are playing in the U.S. this week).
Alison had this to say about the video in the press release: “I wanted the focus to be on the dancers, their bodies and their movement. It’s my first outing into directing. And wow, what an experience! I hope I’ll do more. Its a world I’d like to explore and learn much, much more in!”
Silver Eye is the band’s first album in four years, since 2013’s Tales of Us. Previously the band shared the album’s first single, “Anymore,” along with a video for the song and remixes of the track by Danny Dove and Joe Goddard of Hot Chip, plus the songs “Ocean” and “Moon In Your Mouth.” John Congleton and The Haxan Cloak both did production work on the album. Goldfrapp and Gregory spent 10 days at the Dallas studio of Congleton, who has also worked with St. Vincent and Wild Beasts, among others. Then The Haxan Cloak (aka Bobby Krlic, who has worked with Björk, among others) worked with the band in London. Leo Abrahams, who has worked with Brian Eno, provided “abstract guitar textures” and David Wrench (The xx, Caribou) mixed the album. Alison Goldfrapp photographed all of the album’s artwork, including the press photos, herself on Fuerteventura, a volcanic island in the Canary Islands.
Alison Goldfrapp had this to say about the album in a previous press release: “We’ve never liked repeating ourselves. Often we react to things we’ve just done. We like the spontaneity of not knowing. It’s only through the process that we start to figure out what it is. The fans who have stuck with us are the ones who embrace that idea and are excited by the thought that they don’t know quite what to expect next.”
