Over the course of the coming year UK newspaper The Guardian will be hosting a monthly concert series called “Sounds From a Room.” The performance webscasts are to take place in the recently built installation A Room for London, a one-bedroom boat situated on top of the roof edge of Queen Elizabeth Hall. Built by Living Architecture and designed by David Kohn Architects in collaboration with artist Fiona Banner, the boat is meant to serve as an actual hotel room throughout the majority of 2012. Each month however, it will also serve as a space of creativity, where a different musician, writer, or artist will be invited to stay for a weekend. In the case of the musical-inclined, the end of their residency concludes with a live performance. Kicking things off was violin maestro and pop songwriter Andrew Bird, whose latest album Break It Yourself is scheduled for release on March 6. You can watch the full 50-minute set here, as well as an interview with Bird below and a documentary short on the creation of A Room for London.
