Death Cab for Cutie
Over the weekend Death Cab For Cutie performed at the Rifflandia Festival in Victoria, British Columbia, marking the last show of longtime guitarist Chris Walla. Last month Walla announced that he would be leaving the band, writing in a statement, “Deciding to leave the band was not, and is not, easy. It’s really, really sad. I love my bandmates, and I’m proud of what we’ve done, and mercifully, those things don’t change with my departure. Moving forward, my plans are simply to continue making music, producing records, and erring on the side of benevolence and beauty whenever possible.”
Closing out their show at Rifflandia, the band performed “Marching Bands of Manhattan,” ending in a big group hug. Frontman Ben Gibbard kept things succinct before the song, saying, “Thank you so much for the last 17 years, Chris.”
Walla will appear on Death Cab for Cutie’s upcoming eighth album, due out sometime next year. Click below to watch fan-captured footage of Walla’s goodbye performance.
