Watch: First Trailer for “Independence Day: Resurgence”
Long-Awaited Sequel Lands June 24, 2016
Back in 1996, when Independence Day was the #1 film of the year, the multiplexes weren’t overly filled with comic book movies and reboots of 20-year-old franchises. Sure it was the same year the first Mission: Impossible movie also came out, which was based on an old 1960s TV show, but most of the top movies of the year were original movies rather than sequels, remakes, and reboots, with no superheroes in sight (not that I’m knocking superhero movies, because some of them are truly great). Twister, Jerry Maguire, The Rock, A Time to Kill, Scream, among others, were some of the biggest hits of 2006.
The long-awaited sequel, Independence Day: Resurgence, will arrive on June 24, 2016 to a very different movie landscape. Let’s put it this way, original star Will Smith opted not to return, instead doing DC Comics adaptation Suicide Squad even though Independence Day, along with Bad Boys, helped cement him as a blockbuster action hero. But Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A, Fox, and Brent Spiner are all back from the original and are joined by Liam Hemsworth and Charlotte Gainsbourg. Roland Emmerich is back in the director’s chair. The premise is simple enough, 20 years after the original invasion the aliens are back. Looks like good old-fashioned fun.
