Richmond, Virginia singer/producer Matthew E. White and British singer Flo Morrissey have teamed up for Gentlewoman, Ruby Man, a collaborative album of covers that came out last month via Glassnote. It includes covers of songs by James Blake, Frank Ocean, Leonard Cohen, The Velvet Underground, Charlotte Gainsbourg, and more. Now the duo has shared a video of their cover of “Grease,” the title track to the iconic 1978 movie musical starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. The song was written by Bee Gees’ Barry Gibb and the original version was sung by Frankie Valli. The video is an animated affair that features cartoon versions of White and Morrissey riding a motorcycle, among other things. Inès Gurovich illustrated and animated the video. Watch it below, followed by the duo’s upcoming tour dates.
Morrissey had this to say about the video in a press release: “I’ve always been enamored with animation and wanted to explore it alongside my music- so it felt like the perfect opportunity for Gentlewoman, Ruby Man. I love the new ground it creates for Matt and I to walk down- there’s a sense of innocence and fantasy to it. I was a fan of Inès’ work via social media but have never met her before. As with the whole process of the album, this coming together of minds couldn’t have felt more natural. Hope you enjoy it, Flo.”
