Oasis recently announced a deluxe reissue of 1997’s third album Be Here Now and shared a new mix of the album’s single “D’You Know What I Mean?” by guitarist/singer/main songwriter Noel Gallagher which is being tagged as “NG’s 2016 Rethink.” Now the Britpop icons are sharing a video for the new version of “D’You Know What I Mean?” Fittingly, it is a re-edited version of the original 1997 video for the song. The original directors, Dom & Nic, and members of the original production team oversaw the new version. Watch it below, followed by the original version of the video for comparison.

Dom & Nic had this to say about the new version of the video: “Back in those heady days we shot the video on beautiful looking 35mm film, then the height of movie making technology, just like it was a feature film. Shooting like that today would be unthinkable for a music video of this scale, film simply costs too much compared with digital cameras for all but the most extravagant projects. We also had the help of The British Army who cleverly saw it as the perfect recruitment drive, though questions were later asked in the House of Commons concerning the British taxpayers helping Oasis make music videos!

“We were also shooting at the location where Stanley Kubrick made the movie Full Metal Jacket complete with bombed out buildings which was private land so we could do whatever we wanted, despite the police and London City Airport threatening to shut us down at any moment.

“The 35mm film from the original shoot had been stored safely in the Oasis archive, which meant we could go back to the original film to re-master and recreate the video. This was the film equivalent of finding the band’s long lost studio master tapes in pristine condition. During the process of re-editing we discovered even more powerful performance moments from the band, more epic helicopter shots and a new pacing with greater drama and energy than before.”

D’You Know What I Mean?” original 1997 video:

Noel Gallagher recently had this to say in a press release about the new mix of the song: “As the years went by I’d started to accept that the songs on Be Here Now were in fact insanely long… too long! Someone (I can’t remember who) had the idea that we re-visit, re-edit the entire album for posterity’s sake. We got as far as the first track before we couldn’t be arsed anymore and gave up….it does sound fucking mega though!”

The Special Edition CD, Deluxe Download, and Super Deluxe Box Set formats include 14 previously unreleased album demos recorded on Mustique Island, a Caribbean island, in 1996. They are appropriately labeled the “Mustique demos.” Below is the full tracklist again.

The newer video is better in every way. More solid sound and clearer picture. Although the original has more guitar reverb. Such a cool location and video concept. It’s a shame Noel got tired of remastering Be Here Now after one track because some of Oasis’s best songs . I would love to hear All Around the World remastered. And I wish Noel had lightened up on the helicopter at the end. Liam was having fun but Noel looked like a serious grouch. I would have trouble getting along with him too.
