The Shins released a new album, Heartworms, in March via Aural Apothecary/Columbia. Now frontman James Mercer has stopped by NPR’s offices to perform a Tiny Desk Concert. For the uninitiated, Tiny Desk Concerts are stripped down sets recorded at the desk of Bob Boilen, the host NPR’s All Songs Considered. Mercer did an acoustic set of two Heartworms songs (“Mildenhall” and “The Fear”), as well as “Young Pilgrims” from 2003’s Chutes Too Narrow. Watch the performance below, followed by the band’s upcoming tour dates.
The Shins have already shared four songs from Heartworms: “Dead Alive,” “Name For You,” “Mildenhall,” and “Painting a Hole,” as well as two separate videos for two separate versions of “Name For You.” They also covered The Smiths’ 1986 classic “Panic” for a live Spotify session. Heartworms is the follow-up to 2012’s Port of Morrow. As usual, it was all written by Mercer, but this is the first Shins album since 2001’s Oh, Inverted World that Mercer has also self-produced (with the exception of “So Now What,” which was produced by Richard Swift).
