Watch: The Weeknd - “Belong to This World” Video
"Machine Gun" Sample Used Without Portishead's Consent
Jul 15, 2013
The Weeknd
The Weeknd has premiered a new music video for his latest Kiss Land single “Belong to this World.” The same song songwriter Abel Tesfaye recently debuted during a live performance in his hometown of Toronto, the Anthony Mandler-directed clip stars Tesfaye as a jumpsuit-wearing cog wandering around a dystopian Japanese cityscape, infatuated by a beautiful dancer.
For those listening closely, “Belong to the World” samples the industrial beats of Portishead’s 2008 single “Machine Gun.” As soon as the video went up online frontman Geoff Barrow took to Twitter revealing that Tesfaye had used the sample without the band’s permission, writing “I think it’s a load of bollox when someone asks to sample you and you refuse they should have the respect as a fellow artist to not use it,” adding “We usually give sample clearance to tunes we like. Its got fuk all to do with money! As most of them are hiphop artist that are skint.”

I actually didn’t like this guy for a long time till his song, ‘starboy’. That is exactly when I got to understand the caliber and talent of this artist. And through that album, he was telling us about himself.
