Watch: Will Ferrell and Red Hot Chili Pepper’s Chad Smith Drum Battle on “The Tonight Show”
And the Winner Is...

Red Hot Chili Peppers
Back in February Will Ferrell took part in a Reddit AMA addressing the very real confusion people have mistaking him for Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith. “It has been acknowledged many times that myself and Chad Smith, drummer for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, share a resemblance to each other,” said Ferrell. “A lot of people think that it’s me playing for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. But that would be an insult to Chad Smith. The truth of the matter is there is no Will Ferrell. Only Chad Smith.”
Responding to Ferrell, Smith himself posted an Instagram video throwing down a very public challenge: “Stop impersonating me. In fact, I need you… drum battle. Me and you. I’ve seen your skills; you don’t got ‘em. Let’s go. Golden cowbell. Winner. Boom!” On the condition that they raise $300,000 for the charities Cancer for College and Little Kids Rock, Ferrell accepted.
Easily reaching the fundraising goal, Ferrell and Smith finally sat down as their respective kits last night on Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show to show off their skills. In a surprise twist (spoiler) Ferrell pulled out an unexpected trump card, playing the cowbell on “Don’t Fear the Reaper,” joined by Smith’s Red Hot Chili Pepper bandmates.
