In honor of the historic Apollo 11 mission, the moon landing, and Neil Armstrong's first steps on the moon 50 years ago today (July 21, 1969), this week's playlist tackles songs about space and the moon. Sometimes the choices are clearly about the space program ("Space Oddity"), other times the lyrics are more abstract and might be more about the romance of the moon rather than actual astronauts and space travel. Other songs are instrumental, but made a space reference in the title. We've got 50 songs in all, to represent the 50th anniversary.

For good measure, we've included tracks by Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner, as well as the 1980s version of the Doctor Who theme (we tried to find the Orbital version, but it's not on Spotify except in a live version). We wanted to include Spiritualized's version of The X-Files Theme, but it's also not on Spotify. Some artists have multiple songs on the mix (David Bowie, Air, Radiohead, and others). We had to include something from The Cardigans' The First Band on the Moon, even though none of the songs are really about space (we picked the one that seemed to fit the best).

Strap in and blast off.
