Kat Dennings can make anything work, even a mustard yellow, ill-fitting, housecoat-like waitress uniform, which is what she wears on 2 Broke Girls. As one of the title characters, Max Black, Dennings splits her time between a Brooklyn diner and an uptown nannying job. The other title character, Caroline Channing (Beth Behrs), is an heiress with no fortune. Ostracized by her former social circle, with no money and no place to live, Caroline ends up in Max's life, both at work and at home. Max's world-weary and street-wise attitude contrasts and clashes with Caroline's seemingly naïve view of the world, creating a balance between them. It is the utterly different way the two deliver their diametrically opposing viewpoints that makes this show work. Max, snarky and patronizing; Caroline, hopeful and winning. The best bits of the pilot are the scenes with Max's compulsively cheating boyfriend Robbie (Noah Mills). Whether it's Max agreeing to be eight minutes late for work, one for each of his eight-pack abs, or Caroline assuring him she's seen better and him grinning and slyly replying, "No, you haven't," the dynamic is inherent. Let's hope these girls stay broke for a while. (www.cbs.com/shows/2_broke_girls)
