30 Rock: Season 2
Universal/ NBC
Nov 01, 2008
Year End 2008 - Best of 2008
30 Rock has taken the place of the sorely missed Arrested Development as the funniest show on television. Tina Fey, currently one of the hardest working people in entertainment, somehow manages to find time to skewer Sarah Palin so brilliantly on Saturday Night Live, do American Express ads with Martin Scorsese, work on her upcoming book, raise her child, and write/produce/star in the comic genius that is 30 Rock. That the smartly-timed show is so brilliant is a testament to its not taking the audience’s intelligence for granted, but it’s not above physical comedy either. Liz Lemon (Fey), Tracy Jordan (Tracy Morgan), and Jack Donaghy (Alec Baldwin) send up everything from television production to politics, often in the same breath. Even though the second season was shortened due to the writer’s strike, it isn’t short on laughs. The 2-disc set is loaded with extras, including commentary, deleted scenes, and best of all, a live performance of an episode at the Upright Citizens Brigade in NYC to benefit the production staff that didn’t get paid during the strike. Werewolf Bar Mitzvah, anyone?
