There are few more exhilarating experiences in music than Animal Collective live and in full flight. But anyone who’s seen the Baltimore ensemble at their most disorientating will know their aural mastery is never a given. Fortunately Live at 9:30a renowned Washington, DC venuesits at the more pleasurable end of the spectrum, despite being recorded after the release of the impenetrable psych muddle that was Centipede Hz.

Whether the band will ever recover from its weakest record to date remains questionable. But the delirium that exudes from the blistering “The Purple Bottle” and the ebullient “What Would I Want? Sky” are a timely reminder of the quartet’s astonishing sonic scope. Likewise, the sublime harmonic reworking of “I Think I Can” and the jinking effect-laden labyrinth of “Brother Sport” point to endless possibilitieswhich bodes well for any new LP. For now, this as powerful a holding statement as you’d hope to hear. (www.myanimalhome.net)
