Four out of the five songs on the Awake EP open with the telltale feedback-squeal of a guitar being too close to an amp. Yes, Trash Talk is still plenty comfortable being a basement hardcore band in small, volatile doses. The eight minutes of Awake go up like a barrel of gasoline-once it starts erupting there's no choice but to brace for impact. The only real surprise is "Blind Evolution." Coming between the shorter, sucker-punch tracks, it's actually got a definable arc, moving between apocalyptic squalls into a chunkier, ominous war-march-think more doom than thrash. Is this the foreshadowing of a new Trash Talk era? Almost absolutely not; they're very happy, and very good, at being a rawks-off, evil-grin hardcore band-and there's no reason to think they have any ambitions higher than that. Especially when there doesn't seem to be anyone else stepping up to that particular plate. (www.myspace.com/trashtalkfu)
