Writer/producer/director/editor Rob Kuhns’ documentary is the first feature-length exploration of the fascinating production and astounding impact of George A. Romero’s 1968 indie horror classic, Night of the Living Dead. Inspired by Richard Matheson and the political and social unrest of the late 1960s, Romero, a commercial filmmaker in his 20s, managed to assemble a patchwork crew of Pittsburgh locals at a little farmhouse to make film history. The documentary is dominated by an exhaustive, often hilarious, interview with Romero that tracks his career from his beginnings making segments for Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood to his current role as godfather of the modern zombie film. Kuhns addresses his subject in a confident, straightforward fashion and the depth and breadth of the additional interviews illuminates just how much influence Night of the Living Dead still has over a huge cross-section of media. But with a running time of only 76 minutes, fans will be clamoring for more, most notably details about the financial mismanagement and copyright issues that followed the Night of the Living Dead’s release and slow rise to international acclaim. Hopefully Birth of the Living Dead will draw even more attention to one of the truly great American films.
