Chicago Code
(FOX, Mondays 9/8 Central)
Jennifer Beals never looks as good as she did with curly hair. But that is not an appropriate hairstyle for superintendent Teresa Colvin, Beals’ character on Chicago Code. Also inappropriate is Colvin’s flirtatious dynamic with former partner, detective Jarek Wysocki (Jason Clarke), who in turn belittles his latest partner, the razor-sharp Caleb Evers (Matt Lauria, Friday Night Lights) and babies his niece-turned-officer Vonda Wysocki (Devin Kelley), whose inexperience is overseen by her partner, Isaac Joiner (Todd Williams). Jarek only listens to himself, running over and around everyone around him. Other than with him, Beals plays the superintendent role as a raging bitch. This core group, along with undercover seedy character Liam Hennessey (Billy Lush), is the taskforce for wiping out corruption.
At the heart of this corruption is scene-stealer Delroy Lindo as crooked alderman Ronin Gibbons. Lindo has his finger in every aspect of organized crime in the city with each episode revealing another frightening layer of his influence. Lindo’s smooth portrayal of Gibbons has the viewer siding with him rather than the cops more often than not.
Increasingly complex aspects of the taskforce’s and Gibbons’ personalities are developed, which make their relationships progressively more intricate and sensitive. Chicago Code isn’t The Sopranos, but it’s making a valiant effort. (www.fox.com/chicagocode)
