The Commune is New York City’s premiere improv comedy troupe, and a breeding ground for talent for the late night TV variety program Weekend Live. When their theater space is shut down to open an Urban Outfitters and one of their own finally makes a break for television, the group’s current lineup—Miles, Samantha, Jack, Bill, Lindsay and Allison—starts coming apart at the seams.

Writer/director/star Mike Birbiglia’s follow-up to Sleepwalk With Me is a drama in comedic trappings, and quite a bit more sad than you’d imagine a film with this cast (Key & Peele’s Keegan Michael-Key, Community’s Gillian Jacobs, Garfunkel & Oates’ Kate Micucci, Tami Sagher and Chris Gethard) would ever be. Still, it’s nice to see this group of funny people navigate these more grounded, sometimes heartbreaking roles. Caution: if you’re a 30-something with yet-to-be-realized dreams, this one’s going to cut close to the bone.
