The Breeders

Fate to Fatal EP

A lot is being said about the new Breeders EP, Fate to Fatal. Primarily the fact that the Deal sisters usually aren't all that prolific, so it's a real treat to be getting something so close on the heels of Mountain Battles. That and it's weird hearing a dude singing for them (Mark Lanegan on "The Last Time") and also weird they decided to cover a Bob Marley song ("Chances Are"). All of this is true.

Outside the well-worn territory, though, it's interesting how the Ohio-based group has continued to deconstruct their sound on the last few releases, getting further and further down to the bone on their instrumentation and melodies. All four songs feel pretty sparse, the sole exception being the more raucous parts of the title track. It really works well for the band, though, as this setting allows the post post-punk songs to flourish in their entirety. Uneven, but not harsh-sincere, but not sappy. Here's hoping there aren't another six or seven years before the next one comes out. (www.breedersdigest.net
