Eyebrows understandably furled when boundary-subverting director Harmony Korine announced that his newest feature, Spring Breakers, would star bubblegum Disney princesses Vanessa Hudgens and Selena Gomez. Together the stars comprise half of a group of friends bound for spring break, a destination they’ll reach at any cost. For them spring break isn’t just about a vacation from reality, but rather a way to be part of one of America’s youthful rites of passage. Korine presents their adventure as a fantastical dreamscape, a 90-minute avant-garde Girls Gone Wild video that provides as much insight about youth culture and the American Dream as any PBS special ever could. Everything about the film is meticulously styled and well chosen, particularly the casting of Hudgens and Gomez, two recognizable figures through whom Korine exploits American ethos. Spring Breakers is the underground porn equivalent of Little Red Riding Hood, something which you aren’t meant to see but want to just the same. (www.springbreakersfilm.com)
