Gamera, Daiei Studio's giant turtle answer to and rival of Toho Company, LTD.'s Godzilla, has unfairly been saddled with the reputation of being a knockoff of The King of the Monsters, a kind of GoBots of kaiju eiga. Sure, Godzilla got there first (over 10 years earlier), but Gamera was the star of a massively successful series of films outside of the United States. Now, thanks to Shout! Factory, the terrapin is getting its due stateside with their release of the original unedited Japanese film in anamorphic widescreen from an all-new HD master.
Any movie that mixes the myth of Atlantis with Cold War paranoia and fire breathing monsters is worth your consideration. The film looks great, is still blissfully short (78 minutes), and is thoroughly enjoyable. There are still some hilarious translations, a bunch of stilted acting, and tons of phony looking special effects. It's the perfect kind of movie to watch with your 10 year-old cousins after Thanksgiving supper. (www.shoutfactory.com)
