Once you get past Glee’s uneven pilot, the real heart of the show starts to reveal itself with its next two episodes. What saved the hiccupping start were the musical interludes that were so jaw-dropping the rest of the story took a backseat. Rising above that, the storylines begin to develop beyond the exaggerated cartoon-ish stereotypes. Each character begins to become more than just what they seem on their Technicolor surface. For various reasons, from cultivating coordination through dance to keeping a hold of your boyfriend, joining glee becomes a necessity for the cool kids. More characters, including more stereotypes (among them, cheerleaders, and knuckle-dragging jocks) are brought to the center and given distinct personalities—and even more riveting storylines than the original glee club members. Teenage issues—from coming to terms with homosexuality to pregnancy to unrequited love to insecurity—are tackled with a sensitivity and humor that is believable. And there are still the passionate musical interludes to spike the whole candy-colored experience. (
