When this record takes off, as it does on the third parts of "Bosses Hang" and later "Anthem For No State," it really takes off, sending you through hyperspace on enormous blissed-out cosmic waves. Much of the new album by Godspeed You! Black Emperor however is, as the band puts it, "a quiet muttering amplified heavenward." Which is no bad thing.

Opening title track, "Undoing a Luciferean Towers," is gorgeous. Evoking both the surreal peace of sunrise and more nefarious funereal goings-on, the track grows, taking in more and more, finally incorporating huge lush segues from major to minor and back, from angelic to macabre dramatic, schisming with cackling carnival devils. Shortly after the six-minute mark, a main stately theme emerges, processional, confident, and hopeful. This march is later revivedslowed-down, in a more confined sonic tunnelon "Fam Famine."

The highlight of the record is its second song, the three-part "Bosses Hang." Glorious. Its opening three chord bass progressionwide as the skyknows it has time, rolling out the chord as a prolonged exhale, sonic emanations that reverberate across the horizon. The breaking apart distortion of a guitar takes up a melody, and, just as giant and relaxed, the drums kick in after the two-minute mark. More guitars join, sustained and swooping, each with a magnificent presence. Part II drops back before picking up into a swirling holding pattern, necessary before the heavenly majesty of Part III. A riff so killer you never want it to end. "Anthem For No State" betrays a deep beautiful melancholy. While Part I sweeps and drones with a soft nocturnal melody, Part II picks up a guitar and has its eyes towards space. Part III sets its effects on 'attack' as an ominous wall of noise cyclones to conjure a darkly elegant theme, its unexpected descending phrases ultra-cool. Soon we're off in astral territory again and by the end we're on another plane altogether, a lovely gigantic mélange of sound, the band fused and focused together as one multi-strata entity, pulsing towards infinity. Godspeed continue to prove they are masters of fashioning sonic atmospheres, no matter how quiet, no matter how huge. (www.brainwashed.com/godspeed/)
