Thirteen-year-old TJ, played marvelously by Devin Brochu, leads a childhood-crushing existence. His mom recently died in a car accident, and he can’t escape the shadow of the metal-loving anarchist Hesher (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), who, against TJ’s wishes, moves into his house with little protest from TJ’s shell-shocked father (Rainn Wilson) and slow-moving grandmother (Piper Laurie). Gordon-Levitt sports some hilarious tattoos along with his 3rd Rock long hair, but Natalie Portman is miscast as the hard-up checkout girl, Nicole. Co-written and directed by Spencer Susser, this dark comedy admirably prolongs its unpredictability to mixed results. If movies like My Bodyguard or Lucas rouse your inner cynic, then Hesher is for you (www.hesherthemovie.com)
