Based on an acclaimed manga by Fumiyo Kouno, In This Corner of the World centers on Suzu, a young woman who grew up farming seaweed with her family in Hiroshima City. As WWII is fought at a distance, Suzu marries and moves to Kure, Japan’s Naval hub. As she grows into her new life as a wife, the war creeps closer to their shores. Her family braces itself as U.S. planes firebomb their city and harbor. One day, she looks to the horizon to see a flash of light, and a dark cloud rising from the direction of her hometown…

Director Sunao Katabuchi is an acolyte of the great Hayao Miyazaki, and while his film echoes the painterly beauty of that master’s work, it calls more to mind a masterpiece by Studio Ghibli’s other co-founder, Isao Takahata: the heart-wrenching Grave of the Fireflies. It’s an effective (and tearjerking) portrait of people who might have lived in pre-War Hiroshima, a city which we still tend to think about only in the terms of its utter destruction.
