Abe (Joaquin Phoenix) is without a purpose. A renowned philosophy professor, he can no longer delude himself into believing philosophy can survive the scrutiny of real world application. Nor does he believe his vast knowledge base will have any use to society, except to students in need of a passing grade. Whiskey and casual sex only fuel his disenchantment. His no-bullshit perspective is often mistaken for charm, even by his intelligent undergrad Jill (Emma Stone), who strikes up a friendship with her professor. She regards his nihilism as little more than a rut, despite the fact that their growing friendship has revealed suicidal impulses. Perhaps her acceptance stems from the fact that his womanizing reputation has proven unfounded, as their friendship has remained platonic—despite her desires for more. Surprisingly, he does not reciprocate her advances: he respects her, believing he is of little use to her unadulterated mind. Or to anyone for that matter.
