Jack Goes Boating
Studio: Overture
Philip Seymour Hoffman

The directorial debut of Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jack Goes Boating centers around the socially awkward Jack, a limo driver played by Hoffman who seems to suffer from a borderline case of Asperger syndrome, and his courtship with the equally quirky Connie, played by Amy Ryan (The Wire, The Office). Both dazzle in their roles, which is expected from an actor of Hoffman’s stature. But Ryan unexpectedly shines with a terrific performance commensurate with her indelible stint as Beadie Russell in season two of The Wire.
The film falters when it focuses on the dysfunction between longtime married couple Clyde (John Ortiz) and Lucy (Daphne Rubin-Vega). But when Hoffman and Ryan are left to explore their awkward romantic chemistry, the film inhabits a beguiling, sublime headspace, one that slyly nods to the schizoid world explored in Punch Drunk-Love between Adam Sandler and Emily Watson.
