Jamilti and Other Stories
Drawn and Quarterly
Nov 01, 2008 Year End 2008 - Best of 2008
Rutu Modan’s characters recall the “clear line” style of Hergé’s Tintin series or the late Margaret Kilgallen. Despite these comparisons, the Israeli cartoonist fashions unique colloquial narratives that recede into each panel with a restful color palette. Modan’s familial and nationalistic themes are not as insubordinate as say, Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis, but the illustrations still electrify the small crevices of your heart with unusual yarns about serial killers and mothers from the grave. 2007’s Exit Wounds delved into the inborn violence associated with the Middle East and the dark realities of the street persist with Jamilti. The titular story in this collection examines a burgeoning romance rattled by a suicide bombing. It’s those types of stories that dot the horizon of this superb collection.
