Joywave are a band building to success in stages. A collaboration with Big Data gave them a hit song and subsequent singles and a full-length added to the reputation. Now, two albums in, it feels like the potential exhibited in short bursts is finally reaching boiling point.

Harnessing a sound somewhere between classic guitar and drums indie rock, and electro-pop, there's something wonderfully unexpected about many of the tracks on Content. They go from the crashing percussion and riff driven groove of "Doubt" straight into the heavily produced "Going to a Place," which finds vocalist Daniel Armbruster acidly opening with "I'm going to a place/Where everybody's pretty/But they're all dead and vacant inside."

These quick switches, mixing styles and changing tempo, make Content so fascinating. It's the work of a band full of ideas, confident enough to throw them all together and accomplished enough to pull it off. (
