Amen Dunes
Love
Sacred Bones
May 14, 2014 Amen Dunes
On his third studio album as Amen Dunes, Damon McMahon has created a melting pot of inviting tones rooted in the traditions of soul king Sam Cooke, the spirit of jazz’s First Lady Alice Coltrane, and the romance of Motown man Marvin Gaye.
Moving beyond the confines of his New York City-based comfort zone, McMahon recorded Love in Montréal with Dave Bryant and Efrim Menuck of Godspeed You! Black Emperor (alongside Colin Stetson, local musicians, and longstanding collaborators Jordi Wheeler and Parker Kindred). The resulting album has been arranged with such care and attention to detail that each track—from the quivering sighs of “Splits Are Parted” to the frayed guitar strums of recent cut “I Can’t Dig It”—is capable of conveying the most complex of human emotions in but one refrain. An entire album’s worth is almost too much to handle. (www.sacredbonesrecords.com)
