When Stan (Michael Stahl-David) finds out his ex-girlfriend, Cathy (Ashley Bell), is going to be in Austin, Texas for the weekend, he spontaneously flies from Los Angeles with the hope of running into her. Under the pretense of a last minute trip to visit his friend Jeff (Zach Cregger), Stan crashes on the couch, as Jeff busily prepares for his debut in an air sex competition. Dragged to the performance, Stan watches with embarrassment – for himself, for his friend, for everyone involved – as Jeff dedicates a lewd and raunchy performance to his own recent ex, Cathy’s friend Kara (Sara Paxton). While temporarily escaping the antics onstage to try to locate Cathy, Stan meets the beautiful, budding musician Haley (Addison Timlin), who causes him to reevaluate his feelings.
Love & Air Sex is a movie for Generation Y’ers, by Gen Y’ers, about Gen Y’ers. Few people in their mid-20s to mid-30s will find it hard to relate to the characters – people whose relationships and professional choices have sent their lives in unplanned, perhaps unfulfilling directions. Though all from Austin, Stan and Cathy flew the coop, each to a different coast, while their friends remained behind in a fog of stagnation. Neither Stan nor Cathy is overwhelmingly happy in their new cities, in part because they are stuck in the past, much like Jeff and Kara.
The air sex competition is an apt setting for their reunions, as it’s idiosyncratic to millenials and illustrative of the way many people cling to the cart-wheeling, care-free liberty of youth, despite the adult situations, pressures, and obligations they face. Director Bryan Poyser (who also receives partial writing credit) does a good job straddling the line between gratuitous, offensive raunchiness, and good-natured humor. Love & Air Sex mines the well-trod field of twenty-somethings’ relationships, but it does so with a unique voice and setting. It relies on some very fortunate coincidences and occasionally employs easy, sophomoric writing, but its heart is in the right place.
