Madman Atomic Comics Volume 3 collects Madman Atomic Comics issues 14-17, plus plenty of guest pin-ups and a bonus section with a closer look at the art, with some notes and other back matter. According to the author Michael Allred's introduction, this will be the last of Frank Einstein's adventures for a little while, as Allred moves onto other projects for the time being.

The volume comprises the sort of weird, and fun Madman-style adventures fans have come to know. With the likable and visually interesting supporting cast and snappy sensibilities, this book retains a unique, enjoyable flavor. I found the guest stories, "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Madman Movie!" (JL Allred; Nick Dragotta) and "Last Night the Atomics Saved My Life" (Jamie S. Rich, Joelle Jones) to be minor miss and big hit, respectively. The guest pin-ups are especially rad, with a few in the stratosphere (I'm talking to you, Jim Rugg, R. Grampa, and, ohmygosh, Gene Colan).

The Allred-penned and drawn stories are mostly episodic; it's fantastic that you can pick these up and enjoy them even without having much of a history with Madman or The Atomics. That being said, they didn't set the world on fire either. Good, solid, enjoyable tales, and that poppy Allred art will have to suffice. 200 pages, $20. (www.aaapop.com; www.imagecomics.com)
