When you’ve been a band for 15 years, there comes a time to look at your output and decide if it’s worth it to keep going. Mates of State‘s new EP, You’re Going to Make It, is the reassurance that comes just before that final quarter of a race. After several seconds of fluffy keys opening “Staring Contest,” Kori Gardner interrupts: “Hey, I like it like this.” Then the song breaks, bass splashing through its center, to offer up their sugary pop for younger millennials, a style that graces the rest of the EP. The drunken sway of “Beautiful Kids” and cinematic ballad of “I Want to Run” see the duo amped to relocate their strength. For Mates of State, their spirit above all else allows them to keep moving forward, leaving a glittery trail in their wake that promises more from their next release. (www.facebook.com/matesofstate)
