Melrose Place (Tuesdays 9/8 Central)

Sep 08, 2009 Web Exclusive Bookmark and Share

The new Melrose Place falls somewhere between the yawn-fest the original started out as, and the backstab-fest it turned into after the network realized being pretty wasn't enough to propel a show.

Not that Melrose Place Mark II doesn't have its share of eye candy. You could put the whole thing on mute and just stare at the gorgeous inhabitants. These include nauseatingly loving couple Jonah (Michael Rady) and Riley (Jessica Lucas) playing this decade's original Michael and Jane; cutthroat uber-publicist Ella (Katie Cassidy) stepping into Amanda's spike heels; bee-stung-lipped medical student-cum-prostitute Lauren (Stephanie Jacobson) taking a note from Sydney; tortured bad boy gone good Augie (Colin Egglesfield) channeling Jake; hayseed hiding secrets Violet (Ashlee Simpson-Wentz) fulfilling Allison's role; and rich boy turned thief David (Shaun Sipos). David provides one of the connections to the past as the son of original Melrose alum, Dr. Michael Mancini. Michael (Thomas Calabro) makes a brief but indelibly nasty appearance, as does his one-time sister-in-law, the resurrected from the dead Sydney (Laura Leighton), who is now the landlady of Melrose Place.

Melrose Place's sudsy storylines are the stuff of guilty pleasure. Within a few minutes scandals arise, betrayals occur, and murders happen. The show moves like a thriller with the number of stories behind stories that are teasingly revealed: Is Augie as good as he seems? Is Violet only accidentally the same coloring as Sydney? Is Ella really doing things out of the goodness of her heart? Is the only way to pay for medical school to turn to prostitution? The more extreme Melrose Place gets, the more tolerable it becomes. (
