Moon Nintendo DS
Renegade Kid/Mastiff
Jun 24, 2009 Issue #26 Spring 2009 - Bat For Lashes
Until recently, first-person shooter games on the DS have been pretty limited. Metroid Prime Hunters and Goldeneye: Rogue Agent had much better regular console games to live up to, but Moon is an original title that has old-school charm and fun to spare. It’s 2058 and you’ve been dispatched to an outpost to investigate a newly discovered structure of unknown origin. And when something’s origin is unknown and it’s a video game, you’re probably going to be shooting at it. Environments and sound (please play with headphones for full effect) create a hauntingly cool sci-fi mood, and the gameplay takes great advantage of what the DS can offer. You move around with the control pad, but you aim with the stylus directly on screen and fire with the shoulder buttons, which adds a uniquely immersive feel to the game. Texas-based developer Renegade Kid has gone back to basics and used old-school smarts with new technology to make a lunar mission worth playing. (www.renegadekid.com, www.mastiff-games.com)
