Secondhand Rapture
Columbia
Jun 20, 2013 MS MR
NYC based duo MS MR have been trickling onto the indie scene for a little over a year now in the form of a clever PR campaign in which they leveraged Tumblr to cunningly release tracks from their excellent 2012 EP Candy Bar Creep Show. So momentum has been building for their New-Wavey pop debut, Secondhand Rapture, which features 12 tracks in all, including all four from last year’s EP. On both releases the standout track is far and away the edgy dream pop anthem “Hurricane,” which is the song through which most first became acquainted with the power of front woman Lizzy Plapinger’s sharp and breathy vocals. Follow up single “Fantasy” is another strong track in a sea of big, heavy songs, which makes Secondhand Rapture a bit overbearing at times. But the hooks are memorable, the production excellent and the overall effect is a sturdy, if familiar-sounding, debut from a couple of no-nonsense pop culture junkies who sound far more interested in writing to-the-point pop songs instead of getting totally drunk on ‘80s and ‘90s nostalgia.
