Okay, so you know how pilots usually kind of suck? (Let's just be honest here). The premiere episode of New Girl very much breaks that mold. Zooey Deschanel justifiably gets most of the hype surrounding the show—and she's great, selling her dorky chick act more than you'd believe a cool beauty like that should be able to (okay, there's a little ham, but it's forgivable).
But the rest of the cast, the three new male roomies that Deschanel's Jess finds herself living with, as well as Jess' best friend, are funny and immediately accessible without being shallow or two-dimensional. That's probably the biggest surprise.
Blessedly, the premise—quirky girl finds boyfriend cheating, moves in with three guys she found on the Internet—takes about three minutes to establish, so viewers are spared the painful establish-the-status-quo crap that most sitcoms stretch out over a whole first episode. Quick-paced direction, snappy dialogue, and fine acting combine in a way that is funny, entertaining, and pleasantly unforced. It's a very good out-of-the-box comedy—crossing fingers that it'll stay there. (www.fox.com)
